Key Benefits
- Original Heirloom Variety – True-to-Type Seeds – Sourced from original heirloom black soybean seed stock, these seeds produce true-to-type plants with the authentic black skin, characteristic flavor, and nutritional profile of the genuine variety – giving home gardeners and farmers confidence that their crop will deliver the expected quality and allowing seed saving for future seasons.
- High Germination Rate – Reliable Establishment – Selected for high germination rate and strong seedling vigor, these black soybean seeds establish quickly and uniformly – producing a full, productive plant stand from a small quantity of seeds and minimizing the waste and disappointment of poor germination that can occur with lower-quality seed sources.
- Exceptionally Nutritious Black Soybeans – Black soybeans are among the most nutritionally dense legumes available, providing high-quality plant protein, dietary fiber, anthocyanins (from the black skin), isoflavones, B vitamins, iron, calcium, and zinc – making them a genuine superfood crop that delivers outstanding nutritional value for home-grown food production.
- Non-GMO Organic Variety – A non-GMO, organically grown heirloom variety free from genetic modification and chemical treatments – suitable for organic garden systems, health-conscious home growers, and anyone who values clean, natural food production without the concerns associated with GMO crops or synthetic agricultural chemicals.
- Versatile Culinary & Health Applications – Home-grown black soybeans can be used in a wide range of culinary and health applications including cooking as a nutritious side dish or soup ingredient, making black soybean milk (hei dou jiang), sprouting for nutritious bean sprouts, soaking in vinegar for traditional health preparations, and using in traditional Chinese medicine dietary therapy.
- Soil Enrichment Through Nitrogen Fixation – Like all legumes, black soybeans fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic root bacteria – naturally improving soil fertility for subsequent crops, reducing the need for nitrogen fertilizer, and contributing to a more sustainable, self-sufficient garden ecosystem that benefits the entire growing space.
How to Plant
Select a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil and a pH of 6.0–7.0. Prepare the soil by loosening to 20–25cm depth and incorporating compost or organic matter before planting. Inoculate seeds with soybean rhizobium inoculant before planting to ensure effective nitrogen fixation. Plant in spring when soil temperature reaches 15°C or above. Sow seeds at a depth of 3–5cm and spacing of 10–15cm within rows, with 40–60cm between rows. Water gently after planting and maintain consistent soil moisture during germination (7–10 days). Thin to the recommended spacing once seedlings are established. Water regularly during flowering and pod fill stages – consistent moisture during these periods is critical for good pod set and bean development. For fresh edamame: harvest when pods are fully filled and bright green (approximately 80–90 days). For dry black soybeans: allow pods to mature and dry on the plant (approximately 110–130 days), then harvest and thresh. For sprouting: soak seeds in water for 8–12 hours, drain, and sprout in a jar or tray, rinsing twice daily – sprouts are ready in 3–5 days. Store harvested black soybeans in a cool, dry, airtight container. Store unused seeds in a cool, dry location to preserve germination viability.
